The Smokies' foliage changes in the mountains beginning in late August and moves downward to the valleys through October. Here is a guide to the spectacular fall colors
Yellow
Flowering beech, birch, black gum, buckeye, hickory, mountain ash, and yellow poplar trees
Scarlet
Red maple tree
Red
Dogwood, maple, pin cherry, sourwood, and sumac trees
Crimson
Blackberry and blueberry bushes
Mixture
Sugar maple (yellow, scarlet, orange), sweet gum (red, yellow, dark purple), red maple, northern red oak, pin cherry (orange, red), buckeye, and witch hobble (yellow, red) trees

Smoky Mountain Colors
 The peak this season is almost always the third weekend in October, but sometimes the colors turn sooner or will last into early November. For those who like a lot of green in their color scheme the first and second weekends of October are the best time to visit the mountains and  for those who enjoy lots of reds, oranges, yellows and browns from the third weekend in October till the first weekend in November.
