Great Smoky Mountains Institute at TremontGreat Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont offers environmental education workshops and programs year-round in the Smokies. Opportunities are available for everyone from grade school children to Elderhostel groups. In most cases, participants eat and sleep at Tremont's in-park facilities while they take part in programs that last for a weekend or a full week. Each year over 5,000 people attend programs at Tremont. Over 3,000 come with school groups, mostly 5th-7th graders, from as far away as Michigan, Alabama, and Mississippi. Tremont also offers five summer camps for persons ages 9-12 and 13-17. For teachers and other adults, Tremont offers special workshops throughout the year. Programs may include hiking, slideshows on flora and fauna, mountain music, wildlife demonstrations, living history, and helping park resource managers in the field. Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont is a nonprofit organization operated by Great Smoky Mountains Natural History Association and the National Park Service.
